Distinctive bottom living species with large head and eyes, feeding on small fish and crustaceans, which it locates through the use of its’ adapted pectoral fins acting as “feelers”. The body is strongly protected with moderately large scales, and an armoured head with protective bony plates.
Bright red colouration, shading to pink, the fish rarely exceeds 40cms in size, but is reasonably common throughout the seas around Britain and Ireland, particularly in the West. It is found over a variety of sea bottoms.
