Well spread species throughout Atlantic, and into Mediterranean and Black Sea, predominantly a coastal species, moving at times into brackish or even fresh water. Frequents sandy or muddy areas, often in large shoals, feeding predominantly on small life forms, including algae. Popular sport fish for shore anglers.
Colouration predominantly silver white, with greenish tinge dorsally and shading towards white ventrally. Relatively large eye, placed well forward. Differentiation of mullet species can be problematical.
