Popular well distributed sport fish , migratory throughout the Atlantic, predominantly in Western regions, but also found in central areas of the Eastern Atlantic. Also an important commercial species.
Frequents shallower reef areas where it feeds predominantly on small fish; normally found in schools.
Relatively long bodied with pointed fins, particularly the tail, and silver colouration, younger fish having rows of irregular spots laterally. Distinct downward curve in lateral line level with second dorsal fin.
