The halibut or hippoglossus hippoglossusis the largest flatfish species known, reaching sizes of about 200 cm. Distinctive features include the concave edge to its tail, a large mouth, and a lateral line with a distinctive curve above the pectoral fin. Colouration of the body is uniformly dark brown or black. Younger specimens tend to be more marbled or spotted with paler marks. Growth rate varies according to density, competition and availability of food.Their distributuin is mainly in the eastern atlantic from the Bay of Biscay to Iceland and Eastern Greenland and in the Western Atlantic from Southwestern Greenland and Canada to Virginia in the US..
