Found throughout Eastern Atlantic from Portugal to Namibia, and into the Mediterranean, living over mud and sand in depths up to 200 metres. Feeding in the main on small life forms including plankton it is not a regularly caught sport fish.
Colouration brownish grey, with a slight violet tinge, laterally shading towards cream. Fins relatively dark in colour. Lips fairly prominent.
