Found in shallow coastal areas of Eastern Atlantic as far north as Portugal, and occasionally in Western Mediterranean, normally over sand or rocky areas.
Feeds on molluscs and crustaceans.
Colouration reddish brown shading to silver ventrally, with distinct lateral white/silver lines, usually four in number. Fins light in colour. Relatively large eye.
