Moderately sized member of the grouper family, found in the Eastern Atlantic as far north as Portugal. Predominantly in shallow water to 200 metres over sandy or rocky bottoms, young in shallowest areas. Feeds primarily on small fish and molluscs.
Colouration brownish grey, lighter on ventral body, and darkish fins. Head relatively long for a grouper.
