Member of the grouper family found throughout Atlantic coastal regions but rarely north of the Bay of Biscay, also into Indian Ocean, and Mediterranean. Grows to a moderate size and fairly long lived, the larger specimens being solitary and usually in deeper water particularly over rocky areas, young fish being found in shallower water. Feeds predominantly on crabs and small fish, and is a sport fish, as well as being a popular commercial species.
Colouration varied greenish brown, into grey, with lighter mottling over whole of body. Fins relatively large in relation to body.
