The grouper ( epinephelus guaza)
is commonest in the Mediterranean, occasionally caught further north, this is a solitary fish living in underwater caves or crevices, particularly in deeper water. Feeds mainly on fish and crustaceans and can grow to considerable size. Deep brown in colour with irregular light blotches on back and sides, yellowish under chin and belly. Spiny dorsal fin with orange edge.
