A commercially important species found throughout the eastern Atlantic, from Bay of Biscay south to South Africa, also the western Mediterranean.
Found over mud and sand bottoms, feeding on crustaceans, worms and other bottom organisms. Body coppery gold in colour, younger fish may exhibit striping.
