Small bottom dwelling species, rarely exceeding 1kg in weight, of little commercial or sporting value. Colouration dark or mid-brown upper body shading to white underside. It has a habit of being buried in the sand or mud, and it spines can inflict a painful sting. It has an electrical discharge capacity.
Found in the Mediterranean and Eastern Atlantic, rarely in northern waters.
