EFSA European Species Championship 2012
The 2012 EFSA European Species Championship was hosted by EFSA Ireland and fished from Dunmore East on the weekend of 28th – 29th of April.
Five sections were represented in the entry of 64 which included 2 Ladies and 1 Junior. 8 boats were chartered to bring the anglers to the fishing grounds.
In the weeks leading up to the event the weather had been very changeable but the long range forecast was showing a clearance for the weekend of the event.
The check in and opening ceremony took place in The Cliff Restaurant on Friday April 27th where the anglers enjoyed a finger food and wine reception.
Saturday morning saw the anglers on the pier at 7.30 to load the boats and head out for the fishing grounds. The single target species was cod and the supplied bait was squid and mackerel.
Weather conditions deteriorated during the day and the anglers were subjected to an uncomfortable days fishing. The conditions forced the boats to stay on the inside marks which are not as productive for the target species.
At the end of day 1 with the anglers battered from their efforts during the day and with the forecast for even worse conditions next day it was deemed necessary to cancel day 2. This decision was taken in conjunction with the boat skippers.
As a result of this the scores from day 1 were to be the final result. A total of 185 cod were recorded. 1 in the 25cm to 30cm grade, 123 in the 31cm to 50cm grade 58 in the 51cm to 60cm grade and 3 over 61cm. The best fish was 65cm which was caught by Scotland’s Willie Carr. The best catch was 13 fish recorded by Ireland’s Dave Rylands.
